North Head Viewing Platforms by CHROFI - Analysis

a video essay by Miles Angus and Max Milner

"The newly constructed viewing platforms at North Head, Manly, designed by Chrofi, incorporate both form and materiality to formalise a deeper understanding of and connection to Country, providing opportunities for education on rich First Nations narratives. Chrofi’s project was constructed within the cultural and political contexts of contemporary Australia’s increasing effort towards reconciliation and is part of a bigger movement in design that acknowledges the colonial past and aims to facilitate and restore communities' connections to Country. Historically, the function of coastal lookouts began as a colonial and military tool for navigation and observing; it then shifted to facilitate landscape appreciation, and now, with projects like the North Head Viewing Platforms, they are now also becoming vehicles for learning about and connecting to Country. Through intertwining conceptual and situational design works and conscious use of materiality and form, the project not only provides an updated area of gathering but further evokes a sense of community upon Car-ran-gel, redefining the contemporary notion of the ‘lookout’ and repurposing it to create what can be termed as a set of understanding platforms…."
