Landscape for Well Being - Fred Hollows Reserve Randwick/Bidjigal and Gadigal Land
Studio Project by Billie Whittaker, Max Dedomezio and Max Milner
This project was part of a three week intensive studio which engaged a focus on designing for the promotion of well being through landscape. The studio's site was located at the northern fringe of the Fred Hollow's Reserve; a small, turfed reserve accommodating local communities and families living along Bligh pl. This site was of interest for many reasons; as a notorious illegal dumping ground, this space is a constant area of damage with residents having to deal with rubbish. Generous efforts have been made by locals to deter dumping with plantings and signage while also trying to reclaim the area as a community space. The majority of the reserve is a crucial and endangered stand of Sydney Coastal Foreshore Gully Rainforest adding to the site's need for conservation.
Conscious design efforts were made to ensure that the reserve remained a space for local communities to enjoy, deter further illegal dumping and to also promote native Sydney vegetation communities such as SCFGR and Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub. As a team, we wanted to incorporate moments of education, play and community: themes that are seen in backyards. In doing so, we wanted to design space for a 'community backyard' where residents of high-density living can relax and play.
This project was installed 21/6/2025 by all members of the Studio.
